History of Wangenbourg
Colonel de Gaulle lived in Wangenbourg for 8 months. He was under the command of General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny. In November 1974, the commune of Engenthal merged with that of Wangenbourg, to become Wangenbourg-Engenthal.
Wangenbourg Engenthal is an Alsatian village in the Bas-Rhin region, 40 km from Strasbourg. Located in the Vosges mountains, the highest point of Wangenbourg is the Schneeberg (3150 feet). A bus service (230-232) links Wangenbourg to Strasbourg via Wasselonne. The nearest train station is in Saverne.
Nicknamed the “Little Switzerland of Alsace” because of the similarity of its landscapes to those of Switzerland, the commune comprises several hamlets:
Engenthal-Le-Bas & Engenthal-Le-Haut
Wolfsthal/Freudeneck
Windsbourg/Schneethal
Obersteigen/Les Huttes
A dynamic municipality
Wangenbourg-Engenthal, classified as a “Green Station”, draws its resources mainly from tourism. A large and varied range of accommodation also contributes to the town's status as a tourist resort.
